SOUTH BRUNSWICK – A South Brunswick mother has been charged with causing the death of her 2-year-old son, according to a joint release from township Police Department Chief Raymond Hayducka and Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey on Tuesday night.

Lynn Bergans, 34, was charged with reckless manslaughter and endangering the welfare of the child after toxicology reports confirmed the son ingested her methadone.

According to the statement, South Brunswick police responded to Sandhill Road on May 15 where they found the unresponsive 2-year-old. Efforts to revive Bergans’ son were unsuccessful.

An investigation by South Brunswick Detective Timothy Hoover and Middlesex County Prosecutor Detective David Abromaitis, the statement said, allege that the child ingested “a combination of water and methadone, which was prescribed to the mother.”

Bergans was arrested and is being held in the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center pending her first court appearance in New Brunswick.
