MONROE – An 81-year-old resident of Monroe was killed in a crash on Monday morning, according to a statement from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey and Monroe Police Chief Michael Lloyd.

According to the release, Shashikant Patel, 81, was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries he sustained.

Several other people involved in the accident were also injured and taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Though details are limited at this time because the investigation is ongoing, authorities said that the driver and eight people in a 2004 Chevy Express Van and the driver and passenger in a 2017 Honda Civic were injured.

Authorities believe that the driver of the Chevy Express Van “failed to yield to a stop sign at the intersection of Matchaponix Avenue and Spotswood Gravel Hill Road and collided with the Honda Civic.”

Authorities did not identify which vehicle Patel was in at the time of the accident.

The crash is being investigated by Officer Daniel Mosakowski of the Monroe Police Department and Detective Erik Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Anyone with information can call Mosakowski at 732-521-0222, ext. 242 or Larsen at 732-745-3263.
