A former New Brunswick school district paraprofessional and coaching staff member was sentenced to five years in state prison for aggravated sexual assault of a minor student.
Eugene Colbert, 31, of South River, was sentenced in Superior Court of New Brunswick on Sept. 27, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said on Monday. He will have to serve 85 percent of his term before being eligible for parole.
Colbert will have to register as a Megan’s Law sex offender and is no longer allowed to work in the public sector.
The South River resident pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree aggravated sexual assault on June 17.
From November 2018 to March, Colbert engaged “in inappropriate sexual conduct with a female student when the victim was 13 years of age, while on school property during school hours,” authorities said.
